John Henry Alvin

John Alvin was born on November 24, 1948, in Hyannis, Massachusetts. His parents were in the United States military, so Alvin and his family moved around often early in his life. He and his parents finally settled down in Monterey, California, when Alvin was in high school. His interest in movie posters began early in life and he looked forward to the Sunday newspaper as a child so he could peruse the latest movie advertisements. Alvin graduated from the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles in 1971. He worked as a freelance artist after his graduation.

BLADE RUNNER - What I like about the design of blade runner, which is an element we can see carry over to numerous other film posters is the two main character(s) up n the top right corner, as a scene plays out below them.

THE LION KING - John Alvin continus his use of the main character in a central position, as a major scene, the circle of life, is portrayed below/ Bright colors and the beam of light make clear that the main character has a huge role to play.

HARRY POTTER 1 & 2 - Alvin arrays all of the Harry Potter characters in his poster, with the main characters at the central position. He also gives us a sense of the scenery by putting hogwarts in the background.

*John Alvin has also designed movie posters fro blade runner, jurassic park, the lord of the rings trilogy, and ET.

A History of the Internet

1.) List 5 applications of the internet.  In other words, what is it good for?
  • Research and Homework
  • Social Networking - Enables people to connect with and keep in tough with people all over the world.
  • Email - Useful in both the professional and personal spheres, email allows us to connect and communicate with others, submit work, and keep up to date.
  • YouTube - A place to watch/post music, movies, viral videos, news stories, video games, etc.
  • Shopping - Well people like to spend money People also dont like to exert the energy to go to a shop. And so eBay and amazon were born.
  • Online games - World of Warcraft, League of Legends, Dawn of the Ancients, etc.
  • Business/Professional Development - Nowadays the internet is one of the best ways to promote yourself. Filmmakers  and artists especially use the internet as a way to connect, gain funding, and present their comleted work.
  • Online Dating - People are connecting with others though internet and finding their life partners. The internet not only helps to find the right person but also to continue the relationship.

2.)  What are stand alone computers?

  • A 'standalone computer' is the one which is not linked with the network. It can't be connected with the internet or LAN or WAN. A standalone computer simply means that it can't receive or transfer information to other computers. Also, you can't browse or check e-mail in a standalone computer.
3.)  What is the main principle behind the telephone network?

  • The main principle behind the telephone network is to provide easy and quick communication between two people over long distances,
4.)  How is the telephone network and the principle behind the internet different?

  • The telephone requires both users to be active in the communication, while with the internet only one user must be "online"
5.)  What were the first internet applications?

  • The very first internet application was electronic mail.
6.)  What is a killer app?

  • A software package that is novel and desirable enough to persuade a consumer to buy pricier hardware in order to run the application. The term "killer application" may be derived from the fact that such an application is perceived to be innovative enough to overcome the competition.
    Better known as "killer app."
7.)  In your opinion what is the internets 'killer app'

  • A killer app in my opinion is a program put in another piece of hardware that is often totally revolutionary. Facebook could be considered a killer app because it completely revolutionized the way people connect and interact.
8.)  What is an IP address and how is it assigned?

  • An IP address is a unique string of numbers separated by periods that identifies each computer attached to the Internet. IP addresses are assigned either automatically by DHCP, or by manual configuration.
9.)  There is a well known principle that inspired the internet original design called "The End to an End Principle"  Find out more about this principle and explain how it applies to the internet.

  • "...functions placed at low levels of a system may be redundant or of little value when compared with the cost of providing them at that low level."
•If you need to do something at the end of connection, why bother with doing it in the middle too?    •If you don’t attempt to do in the middle what you have to do at the end, the network is simpler, more open and better
•Having application state in the network is stupid–keep it at the endpoints"
10.)  In your opinion how will the internet change in the future?
  • I'm not sure exactly how the internet will change over the years, ut I will say that if we keep going down the road we are going, I believe that the internet will become much more free and open, especially in the realm of information and research.
